"Some people flee from commitment because they are frightened that if they put down roots in one soil they will curtail their freedom and never be able to look elsewhere... But freedom doesn't grow in the abstract; it grows in a particular soil with particular people. Inner growth is only possible when we commit ourselves with and to others."
Candace and I talked the other night about how when we met we thought our life together would be defined by this obedience to God that had us forever packing up and going. Going to the next mission field and the next worthy cause. Vagabonds for the Gospel.
Now, our life has taken some changes. We value mission and service to the poor still. But our thinking about how best to do such work has changed. We no longer think we have all the right answers that the "lost" world is groaning for. If we did we could show up, teach everybody some stuff and be on our way. Now, though, the service we think we can offer comes out of a stable life. If we have any truth to give away (and yes, we still believe we do) it's going to be exchanged in a trusting relationship. Trust comes from grace, truth, and TIME.
So our dream now is not to have bags forever packed, but rather to have a place and a people we are committed to.
Shalom,
Josh
