Books I've read

Part of the year in review will be me saying the books I've read.
My sister-in-law had a statistic that something like 60% of Americans will not read a whole book in a year.
So this entry is about a little book called God's Economy by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove.
Jonathan does a good job of telling stories from his experience and about his neighbors. There is no section at the end of the book where you enter your income and expenses to see how God wants you to budget.

I liked that his focus is on God's Kingdom, and his people tying into the Kingdom of God here and now. He doesn't spiritualize the wealth of a Believer, or worse -  say that believers are bound for financial success and comfort (and if they don't achieve such worldly pleasures it is because they didn't have enough faith...) In stead Jonathan reminds us that the gains of discipleship far outweigh the costs and that a community of faith offers more security than a 401K or a big barn.
And once we shift our focus to Kingdom values, we can have all of what we need here and now. God is the extravagant giver, and he is concerned with us.

Thanks for the rec. I've read other things JWH has written, and it's good.

The theme for teaching and discernment at Hope for 2011 is God's Economy. Should prompt some good and challenging discussions.
